Ok let me start for saying that with Digital SLR today and the strides they have made with ISO there is no reason to have noise.

With that said if you do have noise with an image this is something that can help depending on the damage of the photo and the noise within your channels.

First Start by opening your image and going into the Red Channel and applying a surface blur to your Red Channel with a radius of 10 and a Threshold of 12

see image below.

Your going to attack noise on a channel basis so next is going to be your Green Channel with a Radius of 8 and a Threshold of 9

Now it is time for you last Channel the Blue Channel and it has a Radius 5 and a Threshold of 10 as seen below.

This Process adds a very Blurred/Plastic look which is very non pleasing look to me but to try and fix that issue the next step is to try and bring out some of the details with and Un-Sharpen Mask as seen below.

Here is the Before and After below.

Before

After

If this technique does not work for your image I highly recommend the plug-ins listed below.

They have really came a long way with noise reduction technology.

Noise Ninja
Topaz DeNoise

Make sure your pattern is still highlighted and click on the mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette.

The Mask will come up white but if you click on the mask and hit

Ctrl or Command “Mac” + I

It will invert the mask.

Now make sure your foreground color is set to White and hit B on the keyboard to pull up your brush and paint on the body where you want the pattern to be applied.

I hope Everyone enjoyed this tutorial please don’t forget to comment if you have any questions.

If you have never worked with LAB before it can be very confusing but this is just the tip of the Iceberg and can be very helpful for subtle but vivid color corrections.

1. Open any image and go under Image>Modes>Lab Color

2. Go into your curves in your adjustments or for short hit (Ctrl or Command on the Mac + M)

3. Once in your curve palette make sure that your curves look like the images bellow.

Lightness

A

Here is the before and after as you can see the difference is subtle but with all greatly edited photo’s its the subtle touches that make the retouching go from amateur to professional.

Where are you from? Macomb, MI

What was your academic path before coming to the Digital Media Program?I received a scholarship out of high school to study animation with the imagineers in Disney. From there I went on to receive a Degree in Graphic Design and was very much active in the corporate world of business. With the economic hardships we are facing with corporate business, it made me to want to become better at what I don’t know and to per cue other fields of Media design I know I can be good in.

What did you want to be when you were younger? I have always, since I can remember, wanted to be a creative designer. Anything I did, had to have some sort of creative thought incorporated.

What is something most people would be surprised to learn about you? I think that most people would be surprised to learn that I love to cook and have a culinary minor.

What are your strengths on and why are you passionate about it? My strengths I would have to say are Art Directing. Being able to see what something can be before it’s developed and say we need to do it this way using this technique or look at someone’s work and help offer suggestions on making it better. Being able to design and help those bring their ideas to life is what makes it so passionate for me.

What is your favorite part of Digital Media? Editing Audio is a bit challenging, but I love every aspect of digital media. The more I can learn, the more I can offer.

What or who are your influences? Shane Seminole Mielke is who just fires me up every time I see his work. He specializes in Art Direction, Graphic Design, Motion and Photography. Check out his personal page @ http://www.shanemielke.com/work.php.

What is your future plan? I am currently working in the field still as an Art Director and would like to go back, after this degree to obtain a masters in design and teach. While pursuing this, I still plan on freelancing and launching my own design studio that will specializing in the three major design fields…Graphic Design, Photography and Digital Media while offering PR and marketing support for every campaign.

What advice would you give a prospective Digital Media student? Learn as much as you can and be great in everything you do. You won’t break it. Best thing about being a digital artist is you can start with a clean canvas at anytime…so don’t be scared to take chances and try new things. Explore every opportunity the software and tools available to us has to offer. Don’t be afraid to ask someone for help…chances are you know something they don’t and both of you can benefit from talking.
